Addition With Regrouping
Addition with carrying is called addition with regrouping.
Steps involved in addition with carry
• First add the digits in the unit place.
• If the above addition is greater than or equal to 10 then write the unit
place (ones place) digit below and tens place digit carry forward.
• Place the carry forward digit on the top of tens digit.
• Finally add all the three numbers.
• The answer may be two digit or three digit.
Example 1 : Add 58 + 23
Here 58 is a two digit number so write the numbers 5 and 8 according to their place values. So 5 is below tens (T) place and 8 is below ones place (O).
The second number is 23 , which is also a two digit number so write it according to its place values.
T O (1)
5 8
+ 2 3
______
8 1

Example 2: 78 + 22
Write 78 and 22 according to their place value. Then add unit digit
(8 + 2= 10) as this answer is two digit so from that write 0 below the line in unit place column. Write Tens digit (1) below 'T' and above 7. Add all the three numbers ( 1 + 7 + 2 = 10). So the answer is 100.
T O (1)
7 8
+ 2 2
______
1 0 0

Example 3: 98 + 42
T O (1)
9 8
+ 4 2
______
1 4 0
