Expansion of decimals are discussed here.



The expansion of number without decimal is

4,857 = 4 thousand + 8 hundred + 5 tens + 7 ones

4,857 = 4000 + 800 + 50 + 7

According to the place value the decimal numbers can written in an expanded form.

Examples :

2572.678 = 2 thousand + 5 hundred + 7 tens + 2 ones + 6 tenths + 7 hundredths + 8 thousandths

= 2000 + 500 + 70 + 2 + 6/10 + 7/100 + 8/1000 -->(Fractional expansion)

2000 + 500 + 70 + 2 + 0.6 + 0.07 + 0.08 -->Decimal expansion


Write in expanded form :

1) 125.84

Solution :

125.84 = 1 hundred + 2 tens + 5 ones + 8 tenths + 4 hundredths

= 100 + 20 + 5 + 8/10 + 4/100

2) 0.485

Solution :

0.485 = 0 ones + 4 tenths + 8 hundredths + 5 thousandths

= 0 + 4/10 + 8/100 + 5/1000
= 4/10 + 8/100 + 5/1000

3) 9.9

Solution :

9.9 = 9 ones + 9 tenths

= 9 + 9/10

Expanded form to decimal form :

1)Check the places of the given number in whole part.

2)Write that in expanded form.

3) Check the place values of fractional part and then write them after decimal point.

Example :

200 + 50 + 9 + 1/10 + 3/100 + 6/1000

2 = hundred place
5 = tens place
9 = ones place
1 = tenths place
3 = hundredths place
6 = thousandths place

200 + 50 + 9 + 0.1 + 0.03 + 0.006

= 259.136

In words : Two hundred fifty two point one hundred thirty six.

Write as decimal numbers :

1) 70 + 3 + 2/100 + 7/1000

Solution :

73.027

2) 256 + 5/1000

Solution :

256.005

3) 7/10 + 3/100 + 5/1000

Solution :

0.73

4) 5000 + 400 + 30 + 2 + 1/10 + 2/100
