Subtraction Without Borrowing

In this section we will discuss subtraction without borrowing.

In subtraction, we need two numbers. If first number is greater than the 2nd then we can subtract easily, such subtraction is known as subtraction of a number without borrowing.
Another word for subtraction is minus ( -) and we put this sign between the two numbers.
For lower grade math the answer of minus is always less than the first number and greater than the 2nd number.

Example 1 :
∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗
How many flowers are there ? If there are 2 blue flower then how many are red flowers?
Solution : By counting the flowers, we can say that there are total 7 flowers.
Total flowers = 7
Blue flowers = 2
So, if we remove blue flowers from the total we will get red flowers.
Removing means subtraction.
7 – 2 = 5
Red flowers = 5

Example 2:
9 – 1 = 8
8 – 2 = 6
7 - 1 = 6
4 - 4 = 0

Another method of solving subtraction is below but this method is for only single digit.

   8           0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
- 5

Cut 5 circles

   8           0 0 0 ∅ ∅ ∅ ∅ ∅
- 5

Count the number of circles remain.

   8
- 5

  3 -----> answer

Vertical subtraction:
Step 1 : First write the bigger number.
Step 2 : Put the minus sign below it on left side.
Step 3 : Write the smaller number beside it and below the bigger number.
Step 3 : Make a line below the smaller number.
Step 4 : Write the answer below the line.

Some solved examples on vertical subtraction :

   5               8              9
 - 2            - 4           - 3
------    --------     --------
   3              4               6
